Sydney 34 'Belicymo'.
Sydney Yachts and acclaimed yachtsman Iain Murray have developed a concept canting keel yacht implementing design initiatives to further enhance this cutting edge technology. The Sydney 34 'Belicymo', already nicknamed the red rocket, is a pocket sized turbo version of the impressive MBD 50 'Atomic'. With an overall length of 34' she is sure to set the pace on the waters of Pittwater this summer.
Canting keels virtually double the horsepower to weight ratio of a yacht. It is the designer's choice as to whether he takes the gain in horsepower, or in reduced overall weight, or a combination of both. Regardless of how the gains are integrated into a design, the result is the yacht is significantly more powerful for its weight than an equivalent yacht without the canting keel. This latest design incorporates the proven passive wing system from the MBD 50 'Atomic' that eliminates the complication of using centreline daggerboards or canard rudder systems, which can be tricky and awkward. The beauty of the wing system is that it solves the need for an additional leeway resisting surface device. It performs automatically as the keel is canted - simplifying the complexity of handling the yacht. The keel arrangement on "Belicymo" allows the yacht to cant a further 15 degrees than 'Atomic', to a total of 45 degrees. Another outstanding feature is the engine installation which is fully retractable, providing zero drag when sailing. |
