EXCITING NEW SYDNEY 36CR NEARS LAUNCH |
|
|
The eagerly anticipated launch of the new Sydney 36 Cruiser Racer is not too far away. The deck mould is now complete so it's only a matter of time before the first yacht is due to hit the water in May 2006.
This new design has generated a massive amount of enquiries since news broke of its release. Fresh design changes include a walk through transom, easy access to the generous quarter berths and a substantial increase in interior volume. Sydney Yachts trademark open cockpit and modern swept back spreader rig is appealing to a wide range of sailors who like the fact that this yacht is price competitive when compared to other brands.
"It is a bold committment by Sydney Yachts to take on the imported Cruiser Racer market. You can now purchase the Sydney 36CR for a similar price to what's in the market for it size. Difference being you get a much higher performing and better constructed yacht" said Martin Thompson, Australian Sales Manager.
Two of these new designs are set to be launched in the next couple of months. The first Sydney 36CR is heading to Japan, where it will be based at the Hayama Marina Yacht Club. Its proud new owner, Mr Mogi is keen to race his new yacht on Sagami Bay near Yokohama and plans to compete in the Japan Cup.
The second Sydney 36CR will be based in Australia and has been purchased by Michael Delaney. Michael, who previously owned the Sydney 38OD 'Don't Blink' chose this design because of its Cruiser Racer appeal. This allowed him the flexibility of being able to go on family cruises as well as being competitive at Club level racing.
Michael did consider other European builds, but having owned a Sydney Yacht he knew the high ballast to displacement ratio ensured the Sydney 36CR would provide faster performance on the water.

NEW SYDNEY 47CR'S WILL DEBUT AT HAMILTON ISLAND RACE WEEK - AUS |
|
|
The winning trend of the Sydney 47CR’s is set to continue this year at Hamilton Island Race Week. Two, new yachts keen for a win on debut will be competing in the Premier Cruising Division.
Sydney Yachts launched the Cruiser Racer range in July, 2004. The first Sydney 47CR “Gomez”, owned by Steve & Mary Chiodo convincingly won the Premier Cruising Division that same year, on debut. It was then a case of déjà vu in 2005, when John & Deb Balderstone repeated the glory with another win on debut, onboard “Jem”.
This year Paul Clitheroe & Peter Mooney will launch their new Sydney 47CR at Hamilton Island Race Week. It is anticipated that four of these majestic yachts will be racing in the Premier Cruising Division. With this level of entries it will be a win, win for the owners and their crew as they get the bonus of competing twice in the one division. First against the other yachts in the fleet and second against each other, stay tuned for the result. |
|
|
PROFILE OF THE NEW SYDNEY 47CR'S |
|
|
Paul and Vicki Clitheroe were looking to step up to a larger yacht from their Beneteau 40.7 and liked the mix the Sydney 47CR offered. Not only is it a strong performer on the race course but the large cockpit is perfectly suited for entertaining family and friends.
Paul was impressed by the simplicity of the non-overlapping sails and asymmetric set up, it made the yacht easier to handle and is definitely a lot safer for the crew. This new yacht will be based at the CYCA and will race with its standard crew at Hamilton Island Race Week.
Peter Mooney, who previously owned the Sydney 38OD ‘Obsession’ was looking to return to racing after a ten year absence. Peter had a great experience racing his Sydney 38OD and was impressed by its quality and performance, but he wanted to further develop his skills on a larger yacht. He chose the Sydney 47CR and has tailored the boat for long distance and short handed racing.
This new yacht will be launched in May and will also be based at the CYCA. Peter plans to compete in the Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race in 2007 and is looking forward to racing this yacht in its first regatta at Hamilton Island Race Week.

|
|
SYDNEY HARBOUR REGATTA: RSYS
The Sydney 32OD’s also competed at this regatta with four windward/leeward races held on the Saturday. Ray Stone, a new comer to the Sydney 32OD Class onboard ‘Razors Edge’ dominated the day with three impressive wins. ‘Quickie’ (S.Muirhead, B.Caldwell and A.Kench) was not too far behind and finished second overall with ‘Wirrajurnd’ (Peter Whitford) finishing third.
AUDI SYDNEY HARBOUR REGATTA: MHYC
Current Sydney 32OD Australian Champions, Anna & Martin Cross sailed ‘iF’ to victory with four wins and did not place outside the top three throughout the regatta. “It was fantastic sailing, the RPAYC boats did really well” said a jubilant Martin Cross. “We had four members of our family on board and it just goes to show you do not need a heavily experienced crew to be successful in the Sydney 32O Class. It is classic One Design Racing, if you make a mistake the others are quickly nipping at your heels.”
John Groves,a former Young 88 sailor finished second in the Sydney 32OD Division onboard his new yacht ‘Reality’. “We are getting used to the boat and having a lot of fun. We raced with our normal Pittwater crew and are happy with the result. ‘Jester’ owned by Dave and Zorana Bull sailed well to finish third. John Groves with Martin, Anna & Cross PALM BEACH REGATTA : RPAYC
It seems the crew of ‘iF’ are unbeatable this season, winning the Palm Beach Regatta held offshore of Barrenjoey Heads. Angus Grinham was in close contention onboard his yacht ‘Gusto’ finishing just three points behind to claim second place. The crew of ‘Quickie’ owned by Stuart Muirhead and Angus Kench finished the regatta well with a win in the last race to finish third overall.

Hosted by the RSYS this regatta was held over two days on Sydney Harbour. From the outset the crews were eager for some starting practice with two general recalls before the first race got underway. After three races it was clear the crews of ‘Acuity’ (Tony Walls), ‘Estate Master’ (Martin & Lisa Hill) and ‘Shining Sea’ (Stephen Kulmar) meant business, but they had to keep on eye on ‘Outlaw’ (Alan & Tom Quick), ‘Contentious Issue’ (Geoff Masters) and ‘Easy Tiger’ (Justin Lambeth) who were quickly improving.
On the final day, the wind had all but disappeared and racing started in light and fluky conditions. The tussle for the overall win continued between ‘Acuity’ and ‘Estate Master’ but ‘Shining Sea’ was the winner of the day with scoring two wins. ‘Estate Master’ who to date have been the proven performer throughout the season, proved consistency was the key and won the regatta by 6 points.

deckhardware s38od australian championship - aus |
|
|
This is where the crews got serious, 22 yachts lined up to vie for the title of Australian Champion. Racing was held offshore of Sydney Heads and the Championship comprised of nine races, with no drops.
‘Estate Master’ (Martin & Lisa Hill) proved they were determined to be a contender with two wins on the first day of racing. Their regular adversaries, ‘Outlaw’ (Alan & Tom Quick) and ‘Shining Sea (Stephen Kulmar) also scored a win in the remaining two races on the day.
‘Transfusion’ (Guido & Michelle Belgiorno-Nettis) showed a return to form and performed well on the second day scoring a win and two, second places. Also consistent was ‘Calibre’ (Geoff Bonus) who moved further up the pointscore to third place, well in touch of the top two. In fact, the results so far had left 10 boats with a real shot of a podium finish.
Going into the last day of racing for the Championship ‘Estate Master’ was leading by only two points ahead of ‘Transfusion’. ‘Outlaw’ won the first race of the day and the crew of ‘Acuity’ (Tony Walls) finished on a high winning the last race of the series. But ‘Estate Master’ was just too good and took out the Australian Championship, 9 points ahead of ‘Transfusion’. A joyous Martin Hill explained. “It was high pressure all day, ‘Transfusion was always just behind us and we are stoked to have won the Championship. I just steer the boat, the team onboard is great and we worked hard to achieve this result. I couldn’t be happier!” |

HAMILTON ISLAND INTERNATIONS CUP 2006 |
|
|
The InterNations Cup was the first international event for the Sydney 38OD Class: comprising of 11 fun, competitive racing held over five days of competition with great social activities.
Perfect racing conditions welcomed the Sydney 38OD fleet. Peter and Laurie Krueger who had travelled with their crew all the way from San Francisco were excited at the prospect of competing against their Aussie counterparts.
The Invitation Race was held in glorious sunshine against the stunning back drop of the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, proving to the US team their decision to make the trip ‘Down Under’ was a good one. “Ichi Ban” owned by Matt and Lisa Allen who were competing in their first ever Sydney 38OD event, proved they weren’t superstitious by winning this race.
Racing was held offshore of Sydney Heads and the wind was a steady 27knots, in short sharp seas and after a few tentative general recalls the series well underway. This set the tone for the rest of the regatta. Racing was fast, tactical and competitive in testing conditions.
“Racing offshore was a new experience for us: we’re used to racing in the Bay back home. It was exciting beating up to the top mark with a trainload of boats so close together. We certainly had to keep our eyes open when we were on port tack approaching the mark. It was difficult to find an open space and then quickly duck down behind one of the boats to round the mark. Great, great racing” said an excited Peter Krueger.
The winner of the InterNations Cup was not decided until the last leg in the final race of the series. The series had been a tussle between the crews of ‘Estate Master’ (Martin & Lisa Hill), ‘Ichi Ban’ (Matt & Lisa Allen), ‘Transfusion’ (Guido & Michelle Belgiorno-Nettis), and ‘Rush’ (Cameron Miles) and ‘Outlaw’ (Alan & Tom Quick). But the leaders did not have it all their own way and had to work hard to maintain their position. The crew of ‘Easy Tiger’ had a terrific series and were very pleased with their finish in sixth position.
Matt Allen’s ‘Ichi Ban’ won the series only three points ahead of ‘Estate Master’, ‘Rush’ finished third one point ahead of ‘Outlaw’. At the conclusion of the series, Matt Allen explained. “After the first day we were struggling, we dropped our spinnaker in the tide, we certainly had some on. But my crew were magnificent. It has been a great thrill to join the Sydney 38OD family this week”.
The InterNations Cup will move to Hamilton Island in 2007. Peter & Laurie Krueger will definitely be returning to compete and are keen to spread the word. “When we get back home we are going to tell everyone how good it was and get them excited about coming next year”.
